I don't think they mean the same thing.

Contracts answer questions like:

"What do I receive?"

"What do I owe?"

"What happens if someone breaches the agreement?"

They're transactional by nature.

Covenants Create Identity

A covenant asks a different question.

Who are we becoming together?

A covenant isn't merely an exchange.

It's a shared commitment to a mission.

It shapes relationships instead of merely regulating transactions.

That's why churches have historically spoken of members entering into covenant—not simply signing contracts.

Why This Matters

When an organization is built primarily around contracts, compliance becomes the focus.

When it is built around covenant, purpose becomes the focus.

That doesn't eliminate agreements.

It transforms the reason they exist.
